Welcome to Accelerated Reading@Lincoln

We are off and ready to start another year in accelerated reading here @Lincoln!  Please bookmark this blog at school on the netbooks and also at home as it will contain all of your reading assignments each week.  I will be meeting with you for half an hour each day 4 times a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday).  Outside of that time, you will be working independently and in small groups during workshop time in your classroom.  Please use that time wisely as you will have assignments to complete every week for accelerated reading.  I am looking forward to working with all of you this school year and helping you become an even better reader!  I hope everyone had a wonderful summer- I sure did and will put a picture below of my adventures (kayaking trip with my son on the Pudget Sound in Seattle- don't you love the hats!).

Lost City of Atlantis Projects

Please finish up your Bag The Web assignment for Atlantis and post on your blog today. After that, start working on your t-chart comparison (using Word). Please list the reasons why you believe Atlantis was REAL and list the reasons why you believe Atlantis was NOT REAL. Please come up with numerous reasons for each side of the argument. Use the resources listed in the post below to as the basis for your research. Please post your chart on your blog when you are finished.

Use at your own risk!  This does not save very easily!
Cassie gave us this online t-chart website we can use

The lost continent of Atlantis

Please read pages 54-67 in your Classics book. The story is called the Lost Continent.
After reading the story, please use the following links to do research on the Lost City of Atlantis.

Whether Atlantis existed or not is a matter of debate. Some people believe it was invented to illustrate a point during a philosophical argument in ancient Greece. Others believe the story is linked to the destruction of the Minoan civilization on Crete and Thera. While most scholars believe the story of Atlantis was born out of imagination, some maintain it is a true account of a forgotten ancient land. What do you think? Use the resources below to research the ancient city of Atlantis and decide is it FACT or FICTION? Present your ideas in a iMovie (please select a partner and use an iPod Touch) presentation and clearly state what you believe is true or not true based on your research. Did Atlantis really exist- it is up to you to decide!!!!
Have FUN!

Designing Your Game...and More

You should be finished with your cards and they should be laminated.  This week you will focus on designing and creating your game board (I have poster board for everyone).

Step Two: Creating A Game

Your group of 2-3 people will be responsible for creating a unique game in which players of the game get a real knowledge of the of the Negro Leagues and the history of Blacks in baseball. Your team should brainstorm ideas and come up with an idea for a game and a name for your game. The group should make a list of supplies needed and assign who will be responsible for gathering supplies not available in the classroom. Once your group has an idea, these are the roles needed and the job descriptions. Although each person has a task, the group is responsible for giving feedback to each other and agreeing on the final product of each part of the game. Click here to see some samples.

A WIKI on how to make a board game (some great helpful hints here).

You must draw a picture of your game board in Pixie before you begin.  You need to have a very good idea of what it will look like before you begin.

Technical Writer: Using Microsoft Word, this person will write the rules of the game. The rules sheet should begin with a clearly stated objective of the game. There should be a statement for the number of players that can play. The rules section will be clearly written and easy to follow. The third section should be a clear explanation of what is needed to win the game. The others in your group should proofread the instructions before you create the final copy.

Graphic Designer: Create a game board that is neat, interesting (includes appropriate graphics) and logical. Use a good color scheme, appropriate proportion and a nice design. The game board should be educational and reflect the topic of the Negro Leagues and Blacks in baseball. It should include the name of the game on the board. The graphic designer may also create an appealing package for the game. A drawing or plan (in Pixie) should be made first and OK’d with the group and Mr. K before beginning on the actual board and packaging.

Question and Answer writers: These people will create questions and answers and prepare them in whatever format the game requires. If the game questions have categories, the question writers will appropriately categorize them. Questions should have various levels of difficulty requiring various levels of thinking skills. Questions and answers should be in a typed format. Questions and answers should be tested on the others in your group before they are created in the final format.  Please use the Negro Leagues Baseball Player Spreadsheet as a source for your questions.

How you will be EVALUATED- click here for the grading rubric.

Conclusion: By completing this webquest you will have learned about the contributions of Blacks to the great game of baseball. Visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to extend your learning about this historical era and the great contributors of this time in baseball.

This Week...

I hope all of you had a productive week last week while I was out. I am anxious to see the Negro League Baseball cards you have created in Photoshop Elements. This week we will be finishing up your baseball cards and starting to create your games (I would like you to open your cards in Photoshop and then export them as JPG files- go to FILE and SAVE FOR WEB), then you can add them to your blog pages). I will copy and paste the directions below with some samples so you can see what it looks like and how they will be evaluated.  PLEASE start to bring in supplies from home to create your game- cardboard, poster board, and any other supplies you might need.

Steps to Creating Original Negro League Baseball Cards

Steps to Creating Original Negro League Baseball Cards
**If you do not understand or get stuck on any of these steps, PLEASE see Miles or Hannah. They have done this in the past and can help you!

I have created a Jing recording of the following steps to create baseball cards in Photoshop Elements- WATCH IT FIRST!
Unable to display content. Adobe Flash is required.
Unable to display content. Adobe Flash is required.

The groups that I have so far:
Eva and Hannah
Molly and Esme
Miles and Jackson
Anika, Cassie, and Talia
Cian and Aidan

1. Download the baseball card template by clicking here. The link to the baseball card template is
http://www.op97.org/lincoln/reading/good one-baseball_card_template.psd
Save this in your documents folder. Make a folder called Baseball Cards in your documents folder to save all of your work.

2. Select 16-20 Negro League players from the spreadsheet – click here to go the page. It is located at http://lincolnreading1.blogspot.com/2011/03/honoring-black-history-monthnegro.html

3. Collect images from various websites for all of the players you have selected from the spreadsheet. I have listed some great websites below:
Negro Leagues Baseball Players Association
Negro Leagues Player Index
List of Negro League Players

Save these images to your Baseball cards folder- save as the name of player.jpg (for example: jamesbell.jpg).

Before you open Photoshop, please open your photo of the player in Preview and copy it.

4. Open Photoshop Elements (type in Elements in the search box in the upper right hand corner) and go to file and OPEN, go to your Documents folder and find the baseball card template.psd (psd stands for PhotoshopDocument). Click OK and it will open a new window with the baseball card.

Photoshop Tools Palette:
5. The first thing to learn about Photoshop is that everything is in LAYERS. Think of a cake with layers, one on top of the other, which we can see if we cut the cake in half. Look to the bottom right in Photoshop, that is where you will see the layers in the baseball card- you have several layers such as the banner layer, paste photo here layer…

6. Look at the tool palette, you want to select the arrow (move tool). Use that to select the PASTE PHOTO HERE layer in the bottom right hand corner. With that selected, paste the photo of the player you copied earlier from Preview. Now take the arrow and enlarge the photo to fit on the card. If you are having trouble, make sure that you are in the photo layer.

Go to file and save as now! Save in your documents folder as name of player.psd (example: hiltonsmith.psd).

7. Select the banner layer in the bottom right hand corner. Next click on the text tool (the T Tool) . With the text tool, click on the words on the card. You will now be able to highlight the word and delete them, do not click away. Type in the player’s name and nickname (or you can add the player’s team). You can change the size and type of font to the right on the tool bar.

Go to file and SAVE now! Make sure that you save your changes often!

8. If you do not want the ROOKIE sign in the right hand corner. Click on the text tool and click on the word ROOKIE, now you can delete it. It will ask you if you want to delete this layer and click OK. You can now change the border color, background, and also add filters to the player photo.

9. Make sure to save your final card in your documents folder. You will need to print out your cards when you are finished with all of them. These cards will be an important part of your game youa re going to create.

10. Make sure that your group has between 16-20 cards (groups of 2) and 24-30 cards for groups of three.

Have FUN and ask for help if you need it!

Honoring Black History Month...Negro Baseball Leagues

The Starting Line-up: Early History of the Negro Leagues and Blacks in Baseball

Introduction
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is expanding their souvenir and gift shop. They are desiring a fun and educational game about negro leagues baseball that could be sold in their shop. Since the game will be targeted to students, they believe that the best game designers may actually be students themselves. The team whose game is selected will receive a $1000 award and will be recognized at a ceremony commemorating Negro League baseball. Will your game be selected?

The Task
Your team will be designing a game that is both fun and educational. You will need to have some background information about the history surrounding the Negro Leagues, key people, and unique information about the Negro Leagues. To get the needed background information you will have some preliminary tasks that will help you accomplish this. Everyone in your group will be part of your research team.

The Process
Step One: Gathering Background Information
You will be involved in a specific area of research in a group of 2-3 people. You and your group members will become experts in this area and share your knowledge with the others in the class.

Topic: Players and Others Involved in the History of Black Baseball
Assignment: Gather research on the Negro Leagues and players using the Bag the Web links below.  You will be adding to a database of players, so make sure you bookmark or create a Bag the Web for your players.

While researching, please add the players to the Negro Baseball League database by clicking below:
Negro League database of players.
You can also add players by using the form below!
Please check that the player is not already added before you begin.

You can see who has been added below:

To access the database, please log-in using the username and password for your blog.  After you log-in, please click on DOCUMENTS at the top and you will see the link to the database.

Using Photoshop Elements, your group will create 16-20 different “baseball cards” which each feature an important person in the history of blacks in baseball. Each card should be well designed with the person’s name, a picture of them, and the important facts/statistics and contributions that the person made. You will need to open Photoshop Elements first then go to FILE and OPEN to load the template.

Samples of baseball cards.

Letters to Gary Lester, Producer of Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo

Dear Gary Lester,
My classmates and I have just finished watching your movie, Safe Haven The Warsaw Zoo. If I were to rate your movie I would give you a 4½ out of 5 stars. My favorite part was when every person and every animal was safe from harm. My least favorite part was when the Jews were burning in the ghetto.
I guess over all I enjoyed the movie but it made me sad. And I know it’s part of life but why does life have to be so harsh. But your movie has opened my eyes for the past, the present, and the future.
Sincerely,
Cassie

Dear Gary Lester,
My classmates and I just finished the movie “Safer Haven: The Warsaw Zoo”. I give it five stars. I think that the movie was very good. It was very informative and I liked it. My favorite part was the beginning where you showed pictures of Warsaw. Another part I liked was when the woman told the child that burning Jews was not a laughing matter and that they were people too.
Your Movie made me feel sad for the Jews of Warsaw. I also think that the Zabinskis were very nice and brave to risk their lives for the three hundred Jews they saved (even though two did not make it). It also made me feel that the Germans and their allies were so mean.
The movie makes me feel very emotional because I am a Jew. If I were alive and in Warsaw at the time I would most likely have been put in the ghetto and maybe, just maybe, I could have been one of the three hundred Jews the Zabinskis saved.

                  Hannah T. (Lincoln Elementary School)

Dear Gary Lester,
I watched the movie you made called Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo. It was really good. I gave it 5 stars.
My favorite part was when the Zabinski family saved all the Jewish people. It was really clever of them to hide the people in the animal cages. I didn't like that all those innocent people had to die. It was really sad.

Your movie was really informative, it was a great thing to watch. Something that I learned was that the Zabinski family hid people in animal cages I didn't know a lot of the things that you said in it.  A good part about your movie is that it wasn’t too scary but it wasn’t too simple and babyish. It was a great movie that I really enjoyed.
The Holocaust was a horrible thing, because so many people died that didn't deserve to die. Your movie explains about a part of the Holocaust, and other things too. It had details and it really explained it well. Another good thing is that it wasn't too long and boring.
My reaction to the movie makes me wish that there was some way that I could have helped. So many people were killed and I think that is really unfair. Jewish people are human beings too. I know that the Holocaust is over, but when I learn about it, it still makes me angry at the people who killed Jews and sad for the people who died in order to save themselves or others. Thank you for making this movie, it was great.
 From,
Eva C.
Lincoln  Elementary School

Dear Gary Lester,

My name is Molly McGuire I am in Fifth grade.  Yesterday I watched the movie Safe Haven:The Warsaw Zoo; we have been doing a Holocaust Unit. It was very good. I would give it 4 and half stars out of 5.

I like the part when the little kids would steal food but they didn’t care about getting killed. When they got killed their friends would take their part.  I didn’t like people dying and I HATE HITLER!

I can’t believe that if you were 6 months you were considered an adult and you didn’t get milk. I also can’t believe that little kid was laughing when he saw the boy burning, Germans shoot little kids, if you were a Jew and not in the Ghetto you got shot.  I liked that the picture above meant a safe place.  I like how people put animals fur on to blend in.

I really liked the movie it was very good and very educational.

                           -Molly

Dear Mr. Gary Lester,
I really loved the movie. (Safe Haven:The Warsaw Zoo) I give it four stars! My favorite part was the children smugglers. It’s sad that they’re killed but brave that more took their place anyway. What I hated was the unfair killings the Nazis did and the kid laughing at a Jew burning. What’s so horrible about Jew’s anyway? What did they do to the Germans, huh!
The Germans had some stupid rules like no milk after 6 months old. The movie portrayed the real thing without the blood and gore. Great filming and even better producing.
Sincerely: Cian

Letter to an ah-mazing director of an ah-mazinig movie called Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo! It was really really good! AWESOME.

Dear Gary Lester,
My name is Anika. I am in 5th grade. Yesterday we watched your movie Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo in Mr. Kuntz’s class. We had been doing a unit on the Holocaust. I thought I knew pretty much everything to know about the Holocaust, but seeing the movie proved me wrong! I really enjoyed it. It gave information and taught people about the Holocaust, but at the same time making it not too terrifying, even though in truth the Holocaust was much more than terrifying!
Although the burning animals and Jews was FREAKY!
Seriously, what did the Jews ever do to anybody to deserve that??? As far as I know, NOTHING! I don’t know all the facts of the world, but I definitely know that. Anyway….the  movie was really interesting and educational, but not boring. Which is good! Yay. I really liked the part about how little kids would sneak food into the ghetto, and even though they got caught and killed other kids came to take their place! That is some serious bravery. I also that it was sweet that when the boy was laughing, saying “Look at all those burning Jews!” (that wasn’t sweet. Here comes the sweet part) and then his mom (grandma?) told him that it was no laughing matter and Jews are human beings.
As I said before, I really liked the movie…except for all the gruesome parts….but gruesome WAS the Holocaust, and you got to put some of that in to make it realistic enough. I learned a lot from your movie and really enjoyed it. Oh yeah, and since Mr. Kuntz does happen to know you, and you do happen to be an award winning director, he can tell you how wonderful I would be in a movie.
From,
Anika

Dear, Gary Lester

The other day we saw your movie,  “Safe Haven:The Warsaw Zoo,” and all I could think was that is was one of the best movies I had ever seen.  It was educational, interesting, terrifying but it was also exciting.   My favorite part was when the person you interviewed talked about the little kid that was laughing at the little kid burning and the person said to the kid, “That it was no laughing matter.” I liked that part because I think that it has a very strong meaning and that those were very important words. I really liked all of it and didn’t have a least favorite part ‘cause it was all just so GOOD! I really like how (though it was a little gruesome) it wasn’t all that bad and many grades could watch it without freaking out and screaming. (And you really can’t make a movie about the Holocaust not gruesome at all, I mean the Holocaust was gruesome after all.) All I’m getting to is that if I could rate this movie I would definitely rate it five stars- because that is just how great it is!
Sincerely, Esmé
P.S.  Anika is a great actress and I recommend her.

Week of February 14th: Finishing up the Holocaust Unit

This week we will be finishing up our Holocaust Unit with a viewing of the movie Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo.

Movie Description:
In the opening days of World War II, the Nazis occupy Warsaw. In a display of extraordinary courage and commitment, zookeeper Jan Zabinski decides to hide the city’s most endangered residents in his home. Before war’s end, the Warsaw Zoo will become a safe haven for 300 Jewish men, women, and children. From award-winning director Gary Lester, comes this compelling Holocaust story of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Produced by Feliks Pastusiak and Alex Ringer. Director of Photography: Piotr Bujnowicz. Narrated by Anthony Reece.

Eva is creating a movie pass for everyone and a movie critics sheet for everyone to fill out following the showing.

Please click here to see the movie reviews from our friends at Ein Ganim School in Israel.

Student movie reviews and letters from students at Lincoln School in Oak Park, IL (USA).

You will have until Friday to finish up your projects on the Holocaust.

The students at Lincoln really enjoyed the screening of Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo (with some students giving it more than 5 stars! WOW!).  Students will be writing their reaction papers soon, sharing them on their blog pages, and writing to director Gary Lester.  Please see the comment below by Gary Lester- very cool!

Holocaust Survivors by Molly

Moshe

Moshe was born in Hungary. When World War 2 came Moshe ran into the woods and pretended to be not Jewish and hid with gentiles. He pretended to be gentile because partisans hated Jews and he was there when they were abusing and killing Jews. When World War 2 was over he went back to his village and found out most of his family was killed by Nazis. He immigrated to Israel by him self with nothing and started a new life.

Sonia Welis Frenkel

Another survivor of the Holocaust is Sonia Welis Frenkel. During the Holocaust Sonia’s friend told her to steal some cloth to get more bread, that’s when she got caught and a Nazi put a gun in her mouth but when he shot it didn’t go off, but then he hit her on the head and made her leave. That night she was so disturbed that she couldn’t sleep. The next morning when she was sewing uniforms she said her head really hurt so much she could barley see, but if she stopped working they would kill her. After the holocaust she wouldn’t let her family take showers, she actually broke the tap.

Bracha

Bracha was only six when world war two came. She was sent to a station where Jews were sent to camps or were killed.  Bracha Said they were lucky because they succeeded to get out of the place with the help of a Rumania Officer that put them into a house with a Russian family. There were five people in one small room. Holocaust Letter from honorable President of Israel Mr.Shimon Peres

http://www.globaldreamers.org/11holocaust/letter.html

January 30th,2011
Jerusalem
Dear Miki,
I wish to thank you for the movie “Safe Haven” which you sent me and for your letter.
The film tells the story of the miraculous rescue by the righteous gentiles Yan and Antonia Zabinski; its sentimental value and the first recorded documentary,
the immortalization of the Holocaust, its heroism and the bequeathing of the future generations.
This is another reminder that there was one righteous man in Sodom.
My blessings and appreciation are given to the directors Richard and Gary Lester, to the educator Marsha Goren, and to all of the partners of this important creative work and its worldwide distribution.
Many thanks for sending it to me.
Wishing you all the best,
Shimon Peres
